Literary analysis and creative writing for high school students
This class will focus on the short story, exploring literary analysis and creative writing. We'll read stories from C. S. Lewis, Franz Kafka, Mark Twain, Anton Chekhov, Roald Dahl, B. J. Novak, Ray Bradbury, and more, and we'll discuss, analyze, and debate them in class.
In the first semester, we'll learn about the elements of writing a story (such as plot, character, and dialogue), as well as creative writing topics (such as inspiration, overcoming writer's block, and shaping a story). In the second semester, as a final project, each student will produce a completed, polished short story. The class will end with a short story competition - with a prize!
The class includes readings, assignments, class discussions, pop quizzes (focusing on vocabulary), a midterm exam, and the final short story.
